The STROMAL IMMUNOLOGY GROUP aims to extend the awareness of and integration between the fields of immunology and stromal cell biology.
We act as a focal point for discussion, networking and dissemination of research in both fields. We facilitate this via the organisation and hosting of international research conferences (STIG2012, 2013 and 2015, hosted in York, Cambridge and Oxford, respectively), support early career scientists in this niche area and aim to establish a high quality peer-reviewed journal dedicated to Stromal Immunology.
Having been established at the University of York in 2010, the group has since moved to be split across Cambridge and Oxford with founders Matt and Ben finding new jobs there respectively. October 2011 saw SIS become SIG and then later StIG, swapping Society for Group when the British Society for Immunology (BSI) agreed to us becoming an affinity group with immediate effect.
Matt Lakins, a post-doc in Cambridge and Oxford based Post-doc Ben Owens founded StIG in December 2010 after long discussions over the ever increasing roles of stroma in immunology and cancer biology. StIG has also gained a third member of the team in the form of Patty Sachamitr who is our official treasurer and will also coordinate PR for our meetings and the continuing the interest in the society through promoting awareness.
2011 saw StIG receive funding from three company sources: Miltenyi Biotec, Peprotech and Proteintech. Without this funding we would not have been able to carry out our inaugural meeting in March 2012 and we hope to continue these links to fund further meetings. We cannot stress how grateful we are for the support! In November 2013, our 3 main sponsors were joined by BioLegend and UCB Pharma who all helped to fund our second meeting. This was held at the University of Cambridge over 2 days and included internationally renowned speakers from Amsterdam, Australia, the US, and across the UK.
